SHŌGUN
James Clavell
The Folio Society
The Shōgun Folio Society edition presents James Clavell’s novel in two illustrated volumes, combining printed cloth, metallic detailing and a coordinated slipcase.
Illustrated by Chris Malbon, the edition develops a strong visual identity across the entire object. The artwork extends from the printed pages to the bindings and slipcase, while the silver-finished top edges add a contrasting metallic detail to the two volumes.
The result is a carefully coordinated set in which illustration, materials and finishing work together across every surface.
Production highlights of the Shōgun Folio Society edition
Printed cloth
The illustration is printed directly onto the cloth covering the two volumes, turning the binding into an active part of the visual design. The texture of the material remains visible beneath the printed image, adding depth and tactility to the surface.
Silver top edges
The metallic finish applied to the top edges creates a strong contrast with the warm-toned cloth and gives the book blocks a distinctive visual detail even when the volumes are closed.
A coordinated two-volume set
The bindings and slipcase are conceived as a single visual system. Illustration, typography and repeating decorative patterns continue across the different surfaces, creating continuity between the two books and their case.
Illustrated interiors
Chris Malbon’s illustrations alternate between monochrome and colour, including full-page and double-page compositions. The visual treatment changes throughout the two volumes while maintaining a consistent graphic language.
The physical design continues beyond the interiors, making each component of the edition part of the overall visual experience. From the texture of the printed cloth to the metallic top edges and coordinated slipcase, the production details contribute to the identity of the complete two-volume set.
