OUT OF DATE — POLA PAN 1984–1996
Mark Borthwick
Rizzoli
‘Out of Date’: Pola Pan 1984–1996 brings together Mark Borthwick’s early photographic work made with Pola Pan film, tracing a period that helped define his visual language.
The publication combines fashion, portraiture and personal archive material in a deliberately raw editorial sequence. That character continues into the physical construction of the book through exposed board, a cloth-covered spine, applied photographic elements and a Bodoniana binding that allows the volume to open deeply.
Production highlights
Bodoniana binding
The Bodoniana construction leaves the spine visually distinct from the exposed boards and gives the book a particularly flexible opening. This allows photographic spreads and sequences to be viewed with minimal interruption near the gutter.
Raw board cover
The front and back boards are left exposed and trimmed flush, making the natural texture and visible fibres of the board part of the final appearance of the book.
Brillianta cloth spine
The spine is covered in Brillianta® bookcloth and printed in black using pad printing. Its finer textile surface contrasts with the rougher texture of the exposed board.
Applied photographic panel
A printed photographic panel is mounted onto the front cover and finished with matt lamination. This creates a distinct material layer over the untreated board surface.
Gold and black foil stamping
Gold and black foil stamping is used directly on the cover, adding precise typographic and graphic details while maintaining the deliberately restrained material palette.
Uncoated paper and photographic reproduction
The interior is printed on Munken Print White 150 g/m², an uncoated book paper. Its surface supports the muted tonal range, grain and imperfect texture that characterise much of Borthwick’s Pola Pan imagery.
