Can Love Be a Photograph brings together four decades of work by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin in an editorial object built around transparency, layering and material contrast.

Designed by M/M (Paris), the publication goes beyond a conventional photography book. Printed and transparent surfaces overlap throughout the project, while die-cut details, inserts, loose elements and additional folded components make the physical construction of the book an integral part of its visual language.

The result is a complex production in which printing, materials and binding are closely coordinated to create a continuously changing relationship between image, surface and structure.

Production Highlights

Transparent printed jacket

One of the most distinctive elements of the project is the translucent jacket, where printed imagery and typography interact with the cover beneath. The overlapping surfaces create different visual compositions depending on how the book is viewed and handled.

Die-cut cover and precise registration

The hardcover incorporates a die-cut opening that reveals the layer underneath. This makes the relationship between cover, endpapers and printed elements dependent on accurate registration, turning construction and alignment into part of the graphic design itself.

Multiple materials and transparencies

The publication combines conventional printed pages with translucent elements, inserts and loose components. Different surfaces, thicknesses and degrees of transparency are integrated within the same volume, requiring careful coordination during printing and binding.

Folded and bound-in elements

A folded poster and an additional booklet introduce changes of format within the publication, interrupting the regular sequence of pages and adding further layers to the reading experience.

A layered editorial object

Throughout the book, transparency, overlapping imagery and changing materials continuously alter the relationship between one page and the next. These elements are not simply decorative finishes: they form part of the structure and visual identity of the publication itself.
