Betty Parsons – Carla Accardi
The Peter Marino Collection
Betty Parsons Carla Accardi is an exhibition catalogue created for the Peter Marino Collection, accompanying the exhibition presented at the Peter Marino Art Foundation in Southampton, New York.
The publication brings together two influential figures of twentieth-century abstraction, placing their work in dialogue through colour, gesture and form. Rather than following the structure of a conventional bound catalogue, the project translates this comparison into the physical construction of the book itself.
Designed as a double-sided concertina, the catalogue can be approached from either direction: one cover is dedicated to Betty Parsons, the other to Carla Accardi. This dual entry point gives equal visual weight to both artists and allows the publication to be explored as two connected sequences.
Across 18 panels, the accordion structure can be read page by page or unfolded into a continuous visual composition. Once extended, the catalogue moves beyond the traditional book format and creates a spatial rhythm that reflects the relationship between the two bodies of work.
Production Highlights
Double-sided concertina
The catalogue consists of 18 connected panels, corresponding to 36 printed pages. The accordion structure creates a continuous sequence while the two hardcover ends define the separate entrances to the two sections.
Printed cloth covers
Both covers are casebound and wrapped in Imitlin, with artwork printed on the cloth surface. The two designs create a clear visual distinction between the artists while remaining part of the same object.
Heavyweight paper
The interior is printed on Perigord 300 gsm. The substantial paper weight supports the folding structure while providing a stable surface for the reproduction of saturated colours, graphic forms and large areas of flat colour.
Colour reproduction
Colour plays a central role throughout the catalogue. The printed works move between intense reds, greens, oranges, blues and fluorescent tones, requiring consistency across panels designed to function both individually and as part of an extended sequence.
The physical construction of the Betty Parsons Carla Accardi catalogue turns the publication into an object that can be experienced both through reading and through space.
