At The Royal Academy of Arts in London the curators of the AUSTRALIA exhibition have undertaken a difficult and unprecedented journey: an overview of the last 200 years of Australian art in its multiple phases and forms.
From Aboriginal paintings to the contemporary installations and sculptures of Fiona Hall, this overview makes visible the common denominators that underpin the multi-facetted art of Australia.
The artists in the exhibition, among the most important of the art scene, have a strong bond with their land; the curators’ choice therefore falls inevitably on paintings of landscapes–the main theme of Australian art and the expressive engine of contemporary generations.
The catalogue records the choices of the exhibition’s curators and plays on comparisons of Aboriginal art and modern representations.
